Songs for a New World

Project type

Direction, Set Design

Date

October 2020

Location

Missouri Baptist University St. Louis, MO

This show was chosen in the midst of the COVID-19 for it's timely messaging and the ability to block actors at a distance and maintain social distancing. Masks were worn through the entire rehearsal process and were placed back on at every exit during the run of the show. Additionally, masks were incorporated into certain pieces as it was relevant to the story telling.

The goal, when possible, was to mirror the real world civic and social unrest. The song "On the Deck of a Sailing Ship" transition from it's historical accuracy into a BLM protest. Additionally, the "Transition into The Flagmaker, 1775" ended with the BIPOC actor raising his hands as if to say "Don't shoot." A gunshot was heard, and then transitioned to "The Flagmaker, 1775"
